Pound Sterling

The Pound Sterling is the official currency of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. The symbol for the Pound Sterling is £ (Sterling).
The Pound Sterling (GBP) is the fourth most dealt currency on the exchange market. It is a centerpiece of the exchange market because of the predominant role that London has in the transactions of currencies.
For 13 centuries, the Pound Sterling has been a fundamental institution for the United Kingdom, as a symbol of the Crown, pillar of the City and key currency of the world economy.
British people continue to be very attached to their currency, and did not follow the European Union for the changeover to the Euro.

The word « pound » corresponds to a weight unity, and sterling comes from the old English stère or stière (strong…).
The symbol of the Pound on an amount is written before the amount and not after as we do in France with the Euro. We will write £7.50 and not 7.50£.
